MUMBAI: The timeless classic "Sholay" is etched in the memory of every cinephile, with its stellar cast and unforgettable characters leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema. However, what many may not know is that the casting for one of the pivotal roles in the film, Thakur Baldev Singh, underwent a significant twist before production began.

Writer duo Salim-Javed initially envisioned the esteemed Dilip Kumar portraying the role of the retired and handicapped Thakur in Ramesh Sippy's magnum opus. However, to their dismay, Dilip Kumar declined the offer, citing a lack of variety in the character. Despite his later expressions of regret over rejecting the role, fate had already paved the way for another actor to step into Thakur's shoes.
